gentoo is a file manager for Linux and Unix systems that is freely licensed under the GPL .

It was programmed in ANSI C by Emil Brink in 1998 and is based on the GTK graphics library; the first published version (0.9.0) appeared in September 1998. The design with its two-column directory view is originally based on the Directory Opus for Amiga and is reminiscent of Norton Commander for Windows .

gentoo has a powerful but "slim" GUI interface that uses few memory and processor resources. For example, all buttons are only labeled with text. The program is fully configurable via the graphical user interface, the lower button bar can be assigned with common command line programs such as tar , gzip or chmod .

The file manager has with the Linux distribution Gentoo in common only the name, both go back to the Gentoo Penguin , English: gentoo penguin .
