Directory Opus 4.17 pre19 under MorphOS

Directory Opus (short DOpus ) is a freely configurable file manager for Windows and AmigaOS , which offers a greatly expanded range of functions compared to the file manager provided by the operating system .

history

The first version of Directory Opus developed by Jonathan Potter was published in 1990 for AmigaOS. Thanks to the large range of functions, the good integration into the operating system and the extreme configurability, the program quickly developed into one of the most popular file managers under AmigaOS. This first incarnation of Directory Opus, which was further developed up to version 4 (1994), was still heavily inspired by Norton Commander with its two directory windows and the row of buttons below . It was released under the GNU General Public License in 2000 and has been developed by various programmers since then.

In the mid-nineties, when the distributor changed, an additional programmer came on board: Dr. Greg Perry. It was decided to abandon the previous concept and expand the program into a full-fledged desktop replacement. The completely revised Directory Opus 5 was also a success and was actively developed and supported until 2000. The rights of the Amiga version were sold in 2004 to the Swedish distributor GuruMeditation, who is now working on adapting Directory Opus to version 4 of AmigaOS.

In June 2001, Directory Opus 6 was the third incarnation of the file manager. The program was ported to Windows by Jonathan Potter and Greg Perry and again extensively expanded. The Windows version is constantly being developed, the current version is 12 (September 2016).

properties

All versions of Directory Opus are extensively configurable. For practically every conceivable operation that the user can carry out with a file, the desired reaction of the program can be defined - for each file type individually. The menus and the assignment of the toolbars can also be redefined by the user.

As of version 5, the graphical user interface can also be adapted to the needs of the user - this includes the number of directory windows, the position and meaning of the individual elements of the user interface or the graphics used in toolbars.

Further functions of Directory Opus are the transparently integrated FTP client, the various display modes for a directory (Windows version: directory tree, document preview, list, ...), configurable folder registers (see also tabbed browsing and tab - only Windows version), the direct support of various archive formats, file filters, functions for renaming numerous files, search functions and the option of completely replacing the file manager of the operating system if desired.
