history

MorphOS in relation to other systems

The history of MorphOS goes back to the year 1995 / 96 , as the main developer Ralph Schmidt (then at phase5 ), with the work on the software solution for powerUP began. Some similarities can still be seen today, so that MorphOS can be seen with a clear conscience as the successor to the powerUP software (ppc.library) or as the fully-fledged software solution actually intended for the powerUP cards. For a long time, the first versions of MorphOS were only available to selected powerUP developers as a full version - otherwise as a time-limited demo version. The current versions are now also available for end users.

The MorphOS project itself started in 1999. This was followed by some software versions up to v1.4. Since Genesi had not paid the developers of MorphOS since July 2003, allegedly due to a lack of resources, there were then some public quarrels among the developers. According to Genesi, some of the affected developers were later paid, and on May 1, 2005 version v1.4.5 was released.

In the course of 2006 some updates for the powerUP version were released.

Version 2.0 followed on June 30, 2008 and can now also run on Genesi's EFIKA board. After two major updates, Version 2.3 followed on August 6, 2009. Version 2.4 was released on October 12, 2009, with support for the Mac mini G4 for the first time . With version 2.4 the support for the eMac followed . In version 2.6 of October 10, 2010, support for the Power Mac was added for the first time . Version 2.7 was released on December 2, 2010. Version 2.7 is mainly a bugfix release, e.g. Some innovations are also included, such as the experimental support for PowerPC 7448 processors.

Version 3.0 was released on June 8, 2012 and the most important new feature was the support of the PowerBook models 5.6 to 5.9. Furthermore, a burning program for CDs and DVDs , an FTP / SFTP client, an updated version of the Odyssey web browser , new reggae classes and the reggae-based audio player jukebox are also included. Starting with version 3.2, other models of the PowerBook G4, iBook G4 and Power Mac G5 series are now supported.
