Geograph is a web-based free project started in the UK in March 2005 as Geograph Britain and Ireland . As part of the project, the region in question will be divided into 1 km² squares. The aim is to collect representative photos within each square. There has been a similar project for Germany since 2008.
construction
The UTM reference system (= Military Grid Reference System) is used as the basis for the squares .
The project is designed as a competition. The aim of the individual is to capture as many squares as possible. A wide variety of ranking lists and evaluation options are offered.
Any registered user can upload photos. Submitted images are reviewed by moderators and classified in two ways:
Geo image - You can only earn a point for images in this category. A geographical point is obtained when the picture is the first in the respective square. In order to receive as many representative images as possible, it is expressly desirable to submit several images within a square. In addition, the submitter receives a personal point in a square for each geographic image that is first for himself .
Extra picture (Supplemental) - Pictures are classified as extra picture that do not represent the square itself and e.g. B. show building parts or plants in close-up.
Images can also be rejected if they do not meet certain quality requirements.
At Geograph Britain and Ireland, which contains considerably more images than Geograph Germany, rules have been introduced according to which points can also be obtained for the second, third and fourth image within a square.
The uploaded photos are under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license, which means that the images can be used under certain conditions, such as naming the author.
