Gepaipyris
Gepaipyris ( Greek : Γηπαιπυρεως, lived in the first century) was a Thracian princess and a Roman client queen of the Bosporan Empire .
family
Gepaipyris was the first daughter of the Roman client ruler of Thrace, Kotys VIII , whose parents were the Thracian king Rhoimetalkes I and his wife Pythodoris. The mother of Gepaipyris was Antonia Tryphaina , daughter of Polemon II and Pythodorida von Pontus. Her maternal grandmother was the granddaughter of the Roman triumvir Mark Antony and was related to various members of the Julio-Claudian imperial dynasty .
Life
Gepaipyris is not mentioned in the literary sources of antiquity. What is known about this Thracian princess comes from the traditional inscriptions from the Bosporan Kingdom, the city of Kyzikos in Asia Minor and coin finds. Kyzikos became the second residence for her family, where Gepaipyris grew up. Various coin finds prove that Gepaipyris carried the title of Queen.
She married the Bosporan King Aspourgos , who had Greek and Iranian roots and was the son of Queen Dynamis from her first marriage to King Asandros .
Gepaipyris had two sons with Aspurgos:
- Tiberius Julius Mithridates - he was named in honor of Mithridates VI of Pontus and died in 68.
- Tiberius Julius Kotys I - he got his name in honor of his maternal grandfather, Kotys VIII.
When Aspourgos died in 38, Gepaipyris ruled the Bosporan Empire with her first son Mithridates until 45. Later her other son Kotys I took over the rule and Mithridates was exiled. The descendants of Kotys I ruled the Bosporan Empire until the middle of the 4th century.
