Equipment factory Matrei

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The company Gerätewerk Matrei e. Gen (GWM) in Matrei am Brenner is an industrial company that manufactures heating and cooking equipment, metal goods and machine tools. A special position of this comparatively medium-sized company results from the special form of the cooperative, which was enforced after the Second World War by the workers themselves against the resistance of the authorities.

Corporate form

The GWM defines itself on its own website as follows: “We are a functioning productive cooperative according to Schulze-Delitzsch . The ownership of Gerätewerk Matrei lies exclusively in the hands of the employees. "

The basis of this type of business is codetermination and shared responsibility. This shapes entrepreneurial thinking and actions and ensures transparency and relevant decisions.

The aim of the cooperative is not the maximum profit, but to secure the livelihood of the employees and the further development of the company. Profits are therefore not paid out as returns, but used for investments.

Origin and history

The Gebr. Braun OHG was located in Matrei until 1948. It manufactured electronic equipment for armaments purposes and filed for bankruptcy after the end of the war.

  • Of the 80 now unemployed employees, director Kommerzialrat Maximilian Maria Moser founded a cooperative with 52 workers to operate in 1948, in which everyone was involved.
  • Initially, hot plates and similar electrical household appliances were produced.
  • In 1992 a branch was built in Fiè on an area of 7,000 square meters.
  • In 2005, the Matrei and Völs plants were merged again at the Matrei site.
  • In 2009 the company had 200 employees, 20% of whom were also members of the cooperative.
