Gerald Henkel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerald Henkel (* 1948 in Burow ) is a German chemist ( inorganic chemistry ).

Henkel studied chemistry from 1968 to 1973 at Kiel University and received his doctorate in 1976 from Bernt Krebs at Bielefeld University (studies on SH ··· S hydrogen bonds in thioacids of phosphorus and carbon). As a post-doctoral student he was at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble, at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and at the Weizmann Institute . In 1984 he completed his habilitation in inorganic chemistry at the University of Münster (on complexes of electron-rich transition metals with biologically relevant chalcogen ligands). He was Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Duisburg , where he headed the Solid State Chemistry Department, and has been Professor of Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry at the University of Paderborn since 2002 . He is on the Council of the Faculty of Science.

Among other things, he deals with bioinorganic chemistry and is a member (and one of the speakers) of a research group of the DFG, which investigates the dynamics of electron transfer processes in transition metal complexes with special lasers and synchrotron radiation sources with application to biologically relevant enzymes. In particular, he is concerned with cytochrome c oxidase , an important enzyme in the respiratory chain and the functioning of its active copper centers.
