Gerard Egan (born June 17, 1930 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish- American psychologist who made important contributions to the theory and practice of counseling .

Life

Egan has taught at Glasgow Caledonian University and is Professor Emeritus of Organizational Studies and Psychology at Jesuit Loyola University Chicago . In the 1970s founded the counseling approach of Developmental Eclecticism (also Systematic Eclecticism or Integrative Eclecticism ).

Egan's counseling model

In his main work The Skilled Helper , which is based on the principles of therapeutic dialogue by Carl Rogers , Egan develops a rational-behavioral approach to crisis intervention or self-reflection and better use of opportunities in different life situations. It is a three-phase model of the type see, judge, act . In the first phase ( exploration ) the critical or unsatisfactory situation is highlighted; blind spots are explored as the causes of "dysfunctional" thoughts, emotions and behaviors, but also possible targeted changes of perspective ( the real story vs. the right story ). In the second phase ( insight ) the client understands the causes of this condition and his own emotions and develops new goals ( the right choices ). In the third phase ( action ), the implementation steps are specifically planned and carried out. In each phase, one's own emotions - both negative and positive impulses - are closely observed.

The model is based in some aspects on the Ignatian retreat , which ultimately also served the decision-making through self-reflection. It was transferred by Egan to questions of organizational development, is also suitable for self-help and is also used by lay helpers.
