Gerd Kehrer (born April 7, 1939 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German painter, draftsman, graphic artist , object designer and author. He lives and works in Frankfurt and on islands in the Atlantic and Mediterranean.

Life

Gerd Kehrer's birthplace: Teichstrasse 5 in the Sachsenhausen district of Frankfurt.

childhood

Gerd Kehrer was born on the Mühlberg in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen and spent his early childhood in Teichstrasse 5. He is the son of Gertrude Kehrer, b. Schuh (1909–2008), seamstress, and Friedrich Kehrer (1897–1954), factor and typographer. The father was in the large graphic company Georg Stritt & Co in Frankfurt am Main, Mainzer Landstrasse 184, head of the hand and machine typesetting (lead type) with around sixty employees. He gave his son his first artistic impulses in drawing and painting.

Due to the war and its aftermath (evacuation to Würges / Camberg im Hintertaunus and several moves within Frankfurt), Kehrer attended three primary schools in Frankfurt in 1946/49: Schwanthaler, Textor, Riederwald School and the Brothers Grimm Middle School with the final certificate Secondary school leaving certificate after a six-week examination period. At the beginning of the 1950s he was a member of the FSV Frankfurt , trained in the stadium on Bornheimer Hang (today's Frankfurter Volksbank Stadium ) and regularly played football on weekends in one of the many youth club teams. Kehrer learned to play the accordion at the Peter Ernst music school in Frankfurt and played in the youth orchestra at their concerts.

artistic education

Due to the early death of his father, he completed a three-year apprenticeship as a positive retoucher at Georg Stritt & Co and received a solid education in almost all disciplines of the graphic trade with theoretical and practical lessons (drawing and painting with Alf Bayrle ) at the Gutenberg School in Frankfurt. Then Kehrer studied painting and art history at the evening school of the Städelschule (State University of Fine Arts, Frankfurt am Main) as well as graphic design at the Westend Art School in Frankfurt am Main. His teachers were the Max Beckmann student Walter Hergenhahn and Max Bittrof .

As a graphic designer and artist

From 1959 Kehrer worked for almost fifteen years as a graphic designer in the advertising department of the Telefonbau und Normalzeit group. Even then, his creative work became known through national and international competitions as well as publications, exhibitions and awards.

A turning point in Gerd Kehrer's life meant his professional independence in 1974, which he had always strived for since his youth in order to be able to realize his artistic ideas independently. Since then he has been working as a freelance visual artist. Gerd Kehrer is married to Eva-Maria Kehrer, b. Farmer, industrial clerk. The couple has a son.

plant

Gerd Kehrer draws, paints and designs mostly in cycles, representational and abstract. The change in his painting style, the variety of his subjects and a diverse technical fund are just as much a hallmark of his work as the joy of experimenting. His work includes drawings, (print) graphics, watercolor , gouache , acrylic, oil painting , mixed media, collage , assemblage , objects. This creates groups of works that can be completely opposite and with which he deliberately evades classification. Cultivating a style seems just as suspect to him as theories about art.

Rotary images

Gerd Kehrer's rotating pictures are composed in such a way that they can be viewed from all four, but at least from two sides - there is neither a fixed top or bottom, nor a fixed right or left. This open offer of observation corresponds to the creation of the work: the image carrier was rotated repeatedly during the painting process.

The first film, James Dean and his fears, was made in 1983 and was shown for the first time two years later in the German Film Museum in the exhibition: Gerd Kehrer - Dean - Monroe - Fassbinder - Welles. Kehrer's rotating pictures, which can also be presented rotating slowly with the aid of a motor to be attached to the rear, are provided with a corresponding symbol.
