Gerental

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gerental is the easternmost of the southern side valleys of the Valais . Today the valley belongs to the municipality of Obergoms .

Today the settlements are no longer inhabited all year round. There used to be a separate valley with jurisdiction here.

Geren valley

The valley community Geren consisted of three districts, upper Gerendorf , lower Gerendorf and mountain village .

The valley was still called Agernen around 1618 .

The valley community of Geren had been an independent valley community and thus an independent municipality since the middle of the 14th century. After she had bought herself free from Herr von Ernen, she had had a free court since 1405. This had high and low jurisdiction, the place of execution with the gallows was above the Gerendorf. The jurisdiction ended with the French Revolution and the Helvetic Republic . Until 1843, Ammanners still administered the valley. Then the valley was bought up by the communities of Oberwald and Obergesten. Until 2008, the former valley was part of the Oberwald community.

The valley was abandoned by the inhabitants after it was bought, they mostly moved to Oberwald and often had the houses moved to their new place of residence. For this reason, there is only one residential building in each of the former localities, while the rest are useful buildings. There is a chapel in every former district. The upper Geren chapel is located between the lower and upper Gerendorf, the lower Geren chapel below the Lower Gerendorf. The chapel on the Hungerberg belonged to the mountain village.
