Life

Gerhard Deutschmann studied from 1951 to 1955 at the University of Music in Munich. After 2 years of seminars, he worked as a music teacher at various grammar schools in Coburg from 1958 and switched to the Musisches Gymnasium Albertinum in 1966, where he worked as a music teacher until his retirement in 1996. From 1969 to 1983 he directed the concert choir "Sängerkranz Coburg".

In addition to his teaching activities, Gerhard Deutschmann devoted himself intensively to composing. His catalog raisonné contains 227 works from choral settings to symphonies up to 2017. One focus of his work is choral music with choral movements and original compositions for female, male and mixed choirs. His choral works include cantatas, madrigals and cycles as well as polychoral works with orchestra. He has received several awards for his compositional achievements. For example, he was among the winners nine times at the Valentin-Eduard-Becker-Composers-Competition in Bad Brückenau from 1973 to 2012. In 1975 he received first prize at an international competition in Barcelona for his three-movement cantata 'La musica', a work for double choir and orchestra. This cantata was also performed at the 125th anniversary of the German Singers Association in Coburg. The Wolfgang G. Haas-Musikverlag Cologne oversees the composer's complete works.
