Gerhard Leinss

Gerhard Leinss (* 1956 ) is a German Japanologist .

Life

After an extensive journey through Asia, he studied Japanese and Chinese at Sophia University in the late 1970s . He then received more formal training at the University of Tübingen , where I received an MA in Japanese and Chinese (1985) and a doctorate in Japanese Studies (1993). Since 1986 he has also been active in teaching and research in Japanese studies, first at the University of Tübingen, later at the University of Trier , the University of Hamburg , the Humboldt University and more recently (2010–2014) at the Institute for East Asian Studies at Cambridge University , where he was also a Senior Research Fellow (2012-2014) at the Needham Research Institute. Since autumn 2014 he has been visiting professor for Japanese studies here at the institute of the Humboldt University in Berlin .

His main research interests are the cultural and intellectual history of Japan in the broader East Asian context.
