Michael Kinski

Michael Kinski (* 1962 ) is a German Japanologist .

Life

In 1987 he obtained his master's degree from the Ruhr University in Bochum . From 1988 to 1990 he completed a doctoral degree at the University of Tokyo . After completing his doctorate in Tübingen in 1991 , he worked from 1991 to 1993 as a research assistant at the Japanese Studies Department at the University of Tübingen . From 1993 to 1998 he headed the Center for Japanese Language at the University of Tübingen in Kyôto ( Dōshisha University ). From 1998 to 2000 he was a teacher for special tasks at the Japan Center, Humboldt University in Berlin . From 2000 to 2006 he was a research assistant at the Japan Center of the Humboldt University in Berlin . After completing his habilitation in 2004 at the Humboldt University in Berlin, he represented the professorship for Japanese Studies at the University of Zurich from 2006 to 2007 . From 2007 to 2009 he was a teacher for special tasks at the Japan Center, Humboldt University Berlin. Since 2009 he has been teaching as a professor of Japanese history of culture and ideas, Japanology, at Goethe University .

His research focuses on theoretical drafts of order: Japanese intellectual history of early modernity (Confucianism, ethics, political ideas), practical drafts of rules: rules of behavior in Japanese decency literature (eating norms since the 16th century in a historical overview and their socio-historical significance), early modern Japanese lifestyles and value orientations as reflected in the Advisory literature, history of science using the example of the “Holland Studies” in Japan in the 18th and 19th centuries.
