Markus Rüttermann

Markus Rüttermann (* 1965 in Hamburg ) is a German Japanologist .

Life

Rüttermann studied Japanese Studies and History at the University of Hamburg from 1985 to 1992 . In 1987/1988 he completed a year of study in Japan at the International Christian University. From 1996 to 2002 he was a research assistant at the Mori-Ōgai memorial at the Humboldt University in Berlin, where he qualified as a professor there in 2002 in Japanese studies. In the same year he was appointed to the Kokusai Nihon Bunka Kenkyū Center in Kyoto . Since then he has been a research professor on the Research Board, combined with a professorship at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI) in Kanagawa. In 2010 and 2012 he was visiting professor at Humboldt University.

In 2013 he received the Walter de Gruyter Prize from the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences .

His main research interests are the social and cultural history of the Japanese Middle Ages and palaeography .
