Life

Origin and family

Gerhard Morrien came from the Westphalian noble family Morrien , which was one of the leading families in the knightly class in the Middle Ages and early modern times and held the office of Hereditary Marshal in the Duchy of Münster from 1350 to 1691 . He was the son of Hereditary Marshal Sander Morrien and his wife Frederun Wolff zu Lüdinghausen. His brothers were Dietrich and Alexander (Dompropst). His sister Margarethe was married to Walter von Münster zu Horstmar. They are among the ancestors of the Dutch princes Willern Alexander, Johann Friso and Constantijn.

Act

In 1510 Gerhard succeeded his father in the Hereditary Marshal's Office. He was also the heir to Nordkirchen Castle , the first castle of which his great-grandfather Gerhard had built. Gerhard married Maria von Wendt , daughter of Adrian von Wendt zu Krassenstein, in 1516. The marriage resulted in ten children, including the son Johann (canon in Münster) and the daughter Maria, who had married Hermann von Velen in 1535 . They were the great-grandparents of Alexander von Velen , called Westphalian Wallenstein . Through him and the count family of Limburg-Styrum, the children of the former Dutch queen are also among the Morrien descendants.
