The judicial linden tree in Mönchsdeggingen , officially Thinglinde , is a natural monument in the district of Donau-Ries , administrative district of Swabia in Bavaria . The official listing number is ND-06609.

The age of one of the mightiest trees in Germany has been proven to be at least 1100 years. Whether the summer linden tree was really used as a court linden tree could not be proven by documents, but it is very likely. The tree was used as a dancing linden tree until the 18th century .

Around 1800 one of the mighty branches emerging near the ground broke off; until then the tree had a circumference of over 15.00 meters. After the split, the circumference of the main trunk is about 4.75 meters, at a height of 1 m above ground level a total of about 9.90 meters. The height is - estimated - about 20 meters.

After the main branch had broken, the tree, which had previously been exposed to rot and fungus, was not given the first protective measures until the 20th century, in accordance with the professionalism of the time, by filling it with mortared bricks and concrete. It was not until the early 1960s that a professional general renovation corresponding to this period could be started thanks to the commitment of a Mönchsdegginger citizen - Messner FJ Wiedemann - and was completed in 1967. In 2006 an extensive maintenance measure was carried out. As of 2017, it would be desirable to rework areas in need of care in good time.

The linden tree is on land and owned by the Evangelical Church Community of Mönchsdeggingen and, as a natural monument, is subject to the care of the Lower Nature Conservation Authority at the Donau-Ries District Office. On the south side towards the mountain there is an explanatory board of the GeoPark Ries for the station of the Mönchsdegginger Geo-Lehrpfad.

The natural monument cannot be reached directly from the Albstraße local thoroughfare. To get to the tree, go from the parking lot diagonally opposite the municipal administration - Anton-Jaumann-Platz - at its eastern end up the Kirchsteig to the cemetery. In front of the cemetery gate, turn sharply right into a narrow, unpaved footpath, from there it is a few meters to the judicial linden tree.

The tree has been listed in the German Tree Archives L. and S. Kühn, Gießen, since 2006.
