The German European School Singapore (GESS International School) / German European School Singapore is an international, multilingual co-educational school in Singapore . It is a German school abroad . GESS is a non-profit school that teaches around 1,500 students (2012/13 school year) from more than 40 countries. The GESS philosophy of “learning to live and to give” forms the backbone of its educational approach. Since 2004, their principle of “one school - two systems” has continuously developed. The European Section offers the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) program in English. This consists of primary school (Primary Years Program, PYP), secondary level I (Middle Years Program, MYP) and upper secondary level (Diploma Program, DP).

As an Excellent German School Abroad , recognized by the German Federal Government , the German section of GESS offers all German school-leaving certificates. GESS focuses on teaching European languages and culture. In particular, the support of the mother tongue is of great importance. For Dutch students e.g. B. the school offers a mother-tongue program that is integrated into the curriculum of the secondary level of the European school branch. The Dutch program was developed in collaboration with Rijnsland Education Worldwide.

history

The first lesson at the German School took place on August 25, 1971 with six students. Less than a year after opening, in April 1972, the kindergarten and preschool opened their doors. The school continued to grow rapidly and the completion of a new school building laid the foundation for today's main campus. In 2004 the school decided to also offer English lessons and to gain accreditation from the IB organization. The name of the school was changed to German European School Singapore (GESS) and the European Section began teaching according to the IB curriculum. A school uniform was also introduced.

Growing student numbers led to the decision in August 2008 to open a separate campus for the preschool and elementary school at Jalan Jurong Kechil. With the GESS preschool accreditation in 2010 to teach the IB Primary Years Program, GESS became a fully certified IB World School for all ages.

Lessons offered

Since the decision to offer education in German and English, the GESS has consisted of two different yet connected sections. The European section of GESS offers the IB Diploma Program in English and the German branch offers training in German that leads to all German school-leaving certificates. However, art and physics are also taught in English in the German branch and history is taught bilingually (i.e. there are sometimes assignments in English, although the German language is dominant). In order to support the cohesion of the school community, the GESS gives different courses in German, English, mathematics and French in both school branches: the basic course (G course) and the extended course (E course). The English e-course is taught at the native speaker level. In the European branch, English is the language of instruction in every subject. Students in this section learn English, a second mother tongue and two foreign languages in the European branch. You can choose between German, Dutch and Danish. From the fifth grade onwards, French, Spanish or Mandarin can be chosen as the third foreign language.

As part of GESS's approach to ensuring holistic education, students have numerous opportunities to pursue a range of creative and sporting activities. In the toddler, kindergarten and preschool groups, the youngest members learn and develop together. The groups are taught by native speakers to enable the children to improve their German and English skills.

The Thuringia curriculum is used in the German branch and the IB curriculum in the European branch .

campus

The German European School Singapore (GESS) was located on two school sites near the Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and the Bukit Batok Nature Park up to and including summer 2018 . A new school campus was built on Dairy Farm Lane , which was completed at the beginning of the 2018/2019 school year.
