Gernot Renger (born October 23, 1937 in Oberhennersdorf ; † January 2, 2013 in Berlin ) was a German biochemist. He was a professor at the TU Berlin .

Renger studied chemistry at the TU Berlin, where he obtained his diploma in 1966 and received his doctorate in 1970 ( investigations into the system of water splitting in photosynthesis ) and completed his habilitation in 1977. In 1980 he became professor of physical chemistry at the Max Volmer Institute for Biophysical Chemistry at the TU Berlin. In 2003 he retired, but continued to conduct research at the institute.

He is known for research into the primary processes of photosynthesis . He examined the mechanism of water splitting during photosynthesis and also the intervention of herbicides and environmental chemicals in these processes and the role of various signaling and messenger substances.

At a conference in Baku in 2011, he challenged traditional theories of photosynthesis with an emphasis on electron transfer. He regards this as subordinate to the dynamics of the positive charge in photosynthesis.

In 1997 he was an Eminent Scientist at RIKEN .
