Gert Jan van Wijngaarden

Gert Jan van Wijngaarden (* 1964 ) is a Dutch classical archaeologist and mycenaeologist .

Van Wijngaarden studied archeology of the Mediterranean and cultural studies at the University of Amsterdam and received his doctorate in 1999 with a dissertation on Mycenaean ceramics and their cultural significance in the Levant , Cyprus and Italy .

From 2001 to 2006 he was director of the Nederlands Instituut in Athene . In early 2007 he was appointed adjunct professor in the Archeology capacity group at the University of Amsterdam.

Research focuses on the interrelationships between the pre- and proto-historic Greece and the Mediterranean. In this context he does field research on the island of Zakynthos . He also deals with museum archeology and cultural politics .
