A gun well is part of a fortress equipped with rotating gun turrets .

In order to create the space required to operate a rotatable dome gun, a vertical shaft (the so-called gun well) had to be built under the tower dome. This gun well accommodated the carriage platform, the operator appearances for the crew, the racks for the ready-to-use ammunition and the necessary electrical systems. He also provided access for the gun crew and ammunition supplies. Depending on the size of the gun, a shaft depth of up to 15 meters was required.

In order to reinforce the design-related weak point of the demolition edge from the horizontal (upper deck) to the vertical (shaft), the so-called pre-armor was installed at the upper edge of the gun well . This pre-armored car was ring-shaped, made of steel and at the same time the carrier for the gun turret dome.
