Protected area of the Antarctic
A protected area of the Antarctica is an area (including marine areas) south of 60 southern latitude obtained by the Antarctic Treaty is specially protected. According to Appendix V of the Environmental Protection Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty "Protection and Management of Areas" from 1991, there are three types of protected areas in Antarctica :
- Antarctic Specially Protected Area ( Antarctic Specially Protected Area - ASPA)
- Antarctic Specially Managed Area ( Antarctic Specially Managed Area - ASMA)
- Historical sites and monuments ( Historic Site and Monument - HSM)
There are currently 73 ASPA, 7 ASMA and 85 HSM.
