The Geschwister-Scholl-Schule is one of three secondary schools in the East Westphalian city of Herford in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Name of the school

The school was initially called Realschule Wiesestraße, later it was named after Hans and Sophie Scholl , who lost their lives in the fight against National Socialism in the Second World War .

location

The school is located on Wiesestrasse 33a on the edge of Herford city center in the old town of Feldmark, not far from the Mathilden Hospital , the Herford ramparts and the Werre .

history

The school was built in 1956 to relieve the primary schools in Falkstraße, Friedenstal and Komturstraße. In 1957, the city council of Herford decided to expand it into a second secondary school alongside the Uhlandstrasse secondary school. The school was built in two stages. After a ceremony on April 21, 1958, only four boys 'and two girls' classes from the secondary school were able to move into the new building. The completion of the second construction phase was promised for the autumn of 1958. The school inauguration ceremony took place on April 14, 1959.

School principals

The school has been run by the rector Marie-Theres Brinkmann since summer 2017. The predecessor was Rector Bernd Oberhokamp, who headed the school from 2007 to 2017.

Situation since 2010

In the school year 2010/2011 35 teachers taught the 535 students. The incumbent rector is Marie-Theres Brinkmann and the deputy is Sven Lehmann.

In grade five there are increased German lessons. From grade six onwards, French lessons are offered, but these can be deselected. From the seventh grade onwards, students can choose the differentiation subjects biology, social sciences and technology.

In the summer of 2010 the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule successfully demonstrated against the savings plans of the Herford administration. The location of the school should be relocated to the building of the current main school in Meierfeld. That would have endangered the existence of the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule because of its unfavorable location to the current catchment area. The school building on Wiesestrasse was to be abandoned as a school location. This should save costs for rent and maintenance of the building. In this context, the energetic renovation of the school's outer skin, which had already been decided and started, was stopped with federal funds. After the demo it was decided to resume the energetic renovation and to continue it in a second construction phase. As a result, the city is bound to use the building as a school for at least another 10 years.

On January 11, 2013 the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule was certified as a "School without Racism - School with Courage".

Since 2015 the Geschwister-Scholl-Schule has been the 101st fair trade school in Germany and the first fair trade school in Herford.
