The Society of German Food Technologists eV (GDL) is a professional and interest group of food technologists and graduates of related training courses in Germany with around 1,200 members. The GDL is a non-profit association based in Berlin. The organ of the association is the specialist journal " Lebensmitteltechnik ".

Purpose and goals of the GDL

The association pursues the goal of promoting food technology for the benefit of its members and society, and as an interest group to represent the professional interests of its members. Its members work in all areas of the food industry, at universities, in the food trade, with authorities, in laboratories, in consulting, with non-governmental organizations and in the supplier industry.

The company maintains contacts with food technology training centers as well as with related societies, committees and associations at home and abroad (e.g. Swiss Society for Food Science and Technology SGLWT; Association of Austrian Food and Biotechnologists, V.Ö.LB). The GDL is an active member of the German Federation of Food Science and Technology (GeFFoST) and above that of the EFFoST (European level) and the IUFoST, the International Union of Food Science and Technology .

The GDL sees itself as a link between agriculture and the consumer, it represents the scientific interests of food technology and promotes practical transfer, it takes a position on food technology issues in politics and society, and promotes factual information of the consumer on all issues in the areas Food and nutrition and sees itself as a point of contact for associations, politics and consumer organizations .

The association is a professional organization that also sees itself as a moderator between the numerous industry-related professional associations. It creates and sells specialist publications, organizes conferences, seminars, workshops, congresses and lectures. It maintains the connection to teaching and research institutions, u. a. through membership in advisory boards of university courses or participation in accreditation .

To promote education and training, it awards a science prize for the next generation of food technology professionals.

History of the GDL

The association was created through the merger of the Association of German Food Technologists (BDL) and the Association of Food Technologists. The BDL goes back to the "Association of Dahlem Fruit and Vegetable Processing Technicians" (BDOGT) founded in Berlin-Dahlem in 1954 , which in 1965 renamed itself to "Association of German Fruit and Vegetable Processing Technologists" (BDOGT) and changed its name to "Association of German Food Technologists" in 1967 "(BDL) changed. In 1979 the "Bund Deutscher Lebensmitteltechniker" (BDLT) joined the BDL as a corporate member. In 1976 the "Association of Food Technologists" (VLT) was founded in Stuttgart-Hohenheim , and in 1990 it merged with the BDL to form the Society of German Food Technologists (GDL).
