Former club building in Beckershoffstrasse

The society Verein zu Mettmann , GVM for short , in Mettmann is a civil partnership .

Emergence

On January 2, 1861, an informal get-together was formed into an association made up of 30 members. The aim was to give the male notables of the Lower Bergisch town of Mettmann the opportunity to meet in the evening. What was remarkable was the simultaneous appointment of a permanent wine committee.

Clubhouse

After the club had to change club premises twice, its own club house with a bowling alley was built in the Neuberg style . It was built in Beckershoffstrasse in 1877. The club stayed in this building for more than a century. When it was no longer possible to maintain the building for financial reasons, the plan arose to sell the property to the Langenfeld contractor Gernot Paeschke, who wanted to demolish the building and build condominiums. This led to loud protests in the city. Under pressure from society and several civic associations, the building was placed under monument protection to make demolition impossible. It was then sold to a private person and a “cultural villa” was created here.

organization

The association is a legal person. Members can be persons or companies, whereby an attempt is made to reflect the population and company structure in the selection. The original restriction of only admitting men was no longer considered appropriate and lifted. A general assembly takes place once a year.
