Only separated from the Limmat by Badstrasse , the Schwanen presents itself as a similarly powerfully proportioned counterpart to the Hotel Limmathof on the opposite side of the river in Baden . Its classicist forms are, however, executed much less strictly and have clearly recognizable Biedermeier and Art Nouveau elements. The facade facing the river appears symmetrical at first glance, but reveals numerous irregularities that can be traced back to the structure of the previous buildings. It combines three wings , the width and window shapes are different. On the other hand, they are aligned with each other through the plaster ashlar, numerous uniform balconies and three large, curved transverse gables. Inside, the Art Nouveau furnishings have been partially preserved, especially in the entrance hall and in various rooms on the ground floor. The dining room in the southern wing is decorated with neo-baroque wall and ceiling paintings.

history

The hotel was built in stages over a period of six decades by repeatedly adding extensions. The first wing from 1842/43 was still a branch of the (no longer existing) Hotel "Engel". It had three floors with five axes and an additional mezzanine . In 1844, construction work began on the actual "Schwanen" hotel. While building the foundations, the workers came across the very rich swan spring . The new building was also three-story with five axes. Around 1850 both wings were combined under one roof, shortly afterwards a single-storey, four-axis dining room with a flat roof terrace was added to the southern end wall. In 1897 the dining room wing was replaced by a new, significantly higher wing, which was then increased by two storeys and a high roof with Art Nouveau gables at the turn of the century. The architect Eugen Schneider from Ennetbaden completed two new wings above the substructure of the three older wings. These were formally aligned with the extended dining room wing.

Due to the general decline of the spa district and the increasing through traffic on Badstrasse, the hotel business proved to be unprofitable and had to be closed in 1976. The power supply company Motor-Columbus then acquired the hotel and used it as an office building. Some parts of the "Schwanen" were placed under monument protection. Motor-Columbus challenged this decision, but was defeated in 1996 by the federal court and therefore sold the building to the general planning company Gähler & Partner AG. This kept office use until 2012 and then began to plan a renovation. It is planned to use it as a business apartment hotel with six hotel rooms, six apartments and five rental apartments. Additional rental and owner-occupied apartments are being built in an annex behind the hotel. The 60 million franc project was originally supposed to be completed in 2016, but the reopening will not take place until the end of 2017.
