She is particularly concerned with the competent professional presence within the scientific institutions and within an interested public. To this end, the GPMR will hold regular scientific conferences and collaborate with other associations on a national and international level.

Objectives and areas of responsibility

In October 2004 , the Society for Philosophy of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (GPMR) was founded on the initiative of Jan A. Aertsen and with the participation of university professors from German-speaking countries who deal with the philosophy of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The GPMR sees itself as a forum for professional exchange on the philosophy of the Arab and Latin Middle Ages and the Renaissance. It represents these areas to the professional and social public. It is now also accredited as a specialist society by the German Society for Philosophy (DGPhil) .

According to the statutes, the purpose of the society is "to promote science in the field of philosophy of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, primarily in the German-speaking area". Furthermore, she is concerned with »the competent professional presence within the scientific institutions and within an interested public«, among other things through the regular implementation of scientific conferences. It »looks after the institutional support of members who are not assigned or belonging to a scientific institution« and cooperates with national and international associations.

The society has held annual meetings since it was founded. Since 2008, these have had their own form under the title “Dies quodlibetalis”: one afternoon, a question relating to the field of work is discussed together, the following morning new publications are presented, followed by a general meeting. In addition, the company supports other events on the thinking of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance as far as possible. Individual subject areas, currently e.g. B. on practical philosophy , are discussed in depth in special working groups.

Scientists who are recognized in the field of philosophy of the Middle Ages in its various languages and cultures as well as the Renaissance and interested young professionals are members as well as scientific institutions. This also applies to those interested in neighboring disciplines.
