The Society for Indo-Asian Art, Berlin eV (GIAK) is a German association that is dedicated to the knowledge, maintenance and promotion of Indian and Indian-influenced art in Asia.

history

The society was founded in the spring of 1993 with reference to the old Berlin East Asian Society, which perished during the National Socialist period. Since then, under the chairmanship of the sinologist and former Federal Minister Christian Schwarz-Schilling, it has been active as a support association of the Berlin Museum of Asian Art . The association sees its work as a tribute to the great cultural and intellectual heritage of the Indo-Asian economic region.

In many cases, German relations with India began not through economic development, but through cultural contacts and the exploration of ancient civilizations by German-speaking scholars. In this sense, the company seeks to make a contribution to strengthening the dialogue between German-speaking Europe and partners in Asia. At the same time, it wants to represent a meeting point for business representatives, enthusiasts, friends and scientists in this area of ​​interest. B. through lectures, joint visits to exhibitions including private collections, social events and the publication of the Indo-Asian magazine deepen and stimulate the exchange of ideas between its members. Every year trips to India take place under the direction of the art historian Caren Dreyer.
