The law on the procedure for referendums, referendums and referendums according to Article 29, Paragraph 6 of the Basic Law regulates details of the restructuring of the federal territory according to Article 29 of the Basic Law, in particular the eligibility to vote , the electoral procedure and the admission of referendums and referendums.

The current law came into force on September 1, 1979 in connection with the new version of Article 29 of the Basic Law and replaced the older law on petitions and referendums when the federal territory was reorganized in accordance with Article 29, paragraphs 2 to 6 of the Basic Law of December 23, 1955.

In the event of disputes under this law, in particular with regard to the admission of referendums and referendums as well as the electoral examination , the direct legal process to the Federal Constitutional Court is given.
