Legal guidelines help to ensure that laws are formulated and written uniformly. They are thus an aspect of legal formality and the subject of legislative theory .

In multilingual countries, such as Switzerland , it is extremely important that the laws mean the same thing in different languages. Thus, language , wording , style and also the sources of law governs the legal texts.
