The Ghanaian pound was the official currency of the West African state of Ghana from July 14, 1958. In the first years of the state's independence, the Ghanaian pound replaced the previously valid currency of the colonial era, the West African pound . The Ghanaian pound was replaced by the Cedi on July 19, 1965 .

The pound was divided into 20 shillings of 12 pence each . In 1965, Ghana introduced the cedi as the national currency at an exchange rate of 1 pound = 2.4 cedi, or 1 cedi = 100 pence.

Coins

In 1958 bronze coins were issued at ½ and 1 pence, in addition in copper - nickel 3 and 6 pence and 1 and 2 shillings. On the penny the 1st President of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah, was depicted and the Latin inscription "Kwame Nkrumah Civitatis Ghanensis Conditor" (Kwame Nkrumah founder of the Ghanaian state) could be read.

Banknotes

In 1958 banknotes of 10 shillings, 1 and 5 pounds were issued. They were produced until 1962 (10 shillings) or until 1963.
