Ghazali (monastery)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ghazali monastery complex is located in a micro-oasis in Wadi Abu Dom about 15 km southeast of the city of Merowe in Sudan . It consists of a sandstone basilica , another brick church, outbuildings (including the well-preserved refectory ), as well as surrounding cemeteries and traces of settlement. It is dated to the early epoch of the Makuria Empire .

The monastery has been known since the 19th century and was documented by Karl Richard Lepsius , among others . It is possible that the remains of an upper storey were still preserved in some buildings at that time, which are now completely derelict.

The central church was uncovered in 1955–56 under the direction of Peter Shinnie . Since 2012 the ruins have been excavated and restored by a team from the Polish Center of Mediterranean Archeology under the direction of Artur Obluski .
