Ghoramara ( Bengali ঘোড়ামারা দ্বীপ Ghoṛāmārā dbīp ) is an Indian island in the Ganges Delta .
geography
Ghoramara is located 150 km south of Calcutta in the Indian state of West Bengal , in the Sundarbans in the Bay of Bengal . The island lies at the mouth of the Hugli River , an estuary of the Ganges . It is only one meter above the sea and has an area of around 4.7 km².
The island is directly affected by the consequences of climate change . Due to erosion and rising sea levels , the island has lost around half of its original size since the 1980s. Much of the population, which used to be around 10,000, has already left the island.
