Gibeonites

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gibeonites were the Hevite population of the cities of Gibeon , Beeroth , Kaphira, and Kirjat-Jearim in Canaan .

According to the narration of the Bible , the Gibeonites managed by a trick to conclude a treaty with the Israelites under Joshua ( Jos 9: 3-15  EU ). This allowed them to stay under Israelite rule after the conquest , but had to provide the woodcutters and water carriers for the Israelite sanctuary. Joshua saved them from being destroyed by the Amorites ( Jos 10.1-10  EU ). The Bible later reports that King Saul tried to exterminate them. As atonement for this, they asked David to hand over seven of Saul's descendants, who they then executed ( 2 Sam 21.1-14  EU ).

In 1st Chronicle 12 ( 1 Chr 12,4  EU ) Gibeonite designates a Benjaminite from Gibeon.
