Distribution area and habitat

The distribution area of ​​the yellow owl extends from southern Mexico to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. There is a gap of around 50 to 100 kilometers between the barred owl. High mountain ranges form the barrier between the two species.

The owl is a resident bird that inhabits pine-oak forests and damp forests at altitudes between 1,200 and 3,000 meters above sea level.

Way of life

The yellow owl is crepuscular and nocturnal. It transmits in well-shaded places in tree tops and in natural caves. In its way of life it resembles the tawny owl and the spotted owl .

The food spectrum of the yellow owl includes small mammals and small birds, frogs, reptiles and insects. He usually hunts from a stand guard. He uses tree hollows as a nesting opportunity. The clutch usually comprises two to three, but in exceptional cases also five eggs. The female breeds alone. The breeding season is 28 to 30 days.
