The Gilbkauz ( Strix fulvescens ) is a kind from the family of authentics owl (Strigidae). It occurs exclusively in Central America.
features
With a body size of about 41 to 44 centimeters, the yellow owl is a large species within its genus. There are no feather ears . The face veil is pale ocher with a striking dark border. The upper side of the body is rust-brown with whitish spots, the underside is pale reddish-brown with dark vertical stripes. Only the front breast is striated across. The beak is yellowish. The eyes are black-brown.
There is a possibility of confusion with the barred owl . However, this species is significantly larger, paler and grayer in color. The zebra owl has a blackish head with a dark face veil.
Distribution area and habitat
The distribution area of the yellow owl extends from southern Mexico to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. There is a gap of around 50 to 100 kilometers between the barred owl. High mountain ranges form the barrier between the two species.
The owl is a resident bird that inhabits pine-oak forests and damp forests at altitudes between 1,200 and 3,000 meters above sea level.
Way of life
The yellow owl is crepuscular and nocturnal. It transmits in well-shaded places in tree tops and in natural caves. In its way of life it resembles the tawny owl and the spotted owl .
The food spectrum of the yellow owl includes small mammals and small birds, frogs, reptiles and insects. He usually hunts from a stand guard. He uses tree hollows as a nesting opportunity. The clutch usually comprises two to three, but in exceptional cases also five eggs. The female breeds alone. The breeding season is 28 to 30 days.
