Ginga Hyōryū Vifam 13 (1998)

Ginga Hyōryū Vifam ( Japanese 銀河 漂流 バ イ フ ァ ム ) is a series of anime series and original video animations from Studio Sunrise . The first series came out in 1983, followed by several adaptations for video and in 1998 the second series Ginga Hyōryū Vifam 13 . The work is about the survival of a group of children who flee from aliens on a spaceship and can be categorized as mecha , science fiction , drama, comedy and action.

content

In the distant future, the human-founded Kreado colony is under attack by aliens far from Earth. The last survivors flee, but after constant attacks only a group of 13 children between the ages of four and 15 are on board the last freighter. To survive, they make the spaceship Janus afloat and want to flee to the next human-populated planet. They not only have to survive recurring attacks and dangers from other planets, but also have to come to terms with life on the narrow ship among themselves.

Production and publication

The anime series was created by Nippon Sunrise under the direction of Takeyuki Kanda , who also developed the story together with Hiroyuki Hoshiyama . The idea came from Hajime Yatate and Yoshiyuki Tomino . The character design was created by Toyoo Ashida and the artistic direction was Toshiharu Mizutani . The mechas were designed by Kunio Okawara . Masuo Ueda and Yoshihiko Marutani were responsible for the production . The 46 approximately 25-minute long episodes were broadcast from October 21, 1983 to September 8, 1984 by MBS . For a while, the series was offered via streaming on the Daisuki platform with English subtitles. It is also known under the English titles Round Vernian Vifam and Galactic Drifter Vifam .

After the television series, Nippon Sunrise produced four 50-minute long anime films that were released directly on video as original video animation . Again it was directed by Takeyuki Kanda. The main author was Masanori Miura , then Hiroyuki Hoshiyama and Yasushi Hirano for the third and fourth parts. Character designer was again Toyoo Ashida and Toshiharu Mizutani was the artistic director. The mecha design comes from Kunio Okawara. The four parts were published as follows:

  • October 28, 1984: Kachua Kara no Tayori ( 銀河 漂流 バ イ フ ァ ム カ チ ュ ア か ら の 便 り )
  • December 21, 1984: Atsumatta 13-nin ( 銀河 漂流 バ イ フ ァ ム 集 ま っ た 13 人 )
  • February 25, 1985: Kieta 12-nin ( 銀河 漂流 バ イ フ ァ ム 消 え た 12 人 )
  • September 25, 1985: Kate no Kioku Namida no Dakkai Sakusen !! ( 銀河 漂流 バ イ フ ァ ム “ケ イ ト の 記憶” 涙 の 奪回 作 戦 !! )

In 1998 a second television series came out. The 26 episodes ran under the title Ginga Hyōryū Vifam 13 .

  • Kimi wa Suteki ( 君 は ス ・ テ ・ キ ) from Move
  • Papa ni Aeru, Mama ni Aeru ( パ パ に あ え る 、 マ マ に あ え る ) from Vifam Singers
  • The Astro Enemy - Müller's Theme ( THE ASTRO ENEMY ミ ュ ー ラ ァ の テ ー マ ) by Move

Video game

In 1984 the series was accompanied by a video game published by Bandai for Bandai. The action game is a space combat simulator, in which a ship has to be steered to a target planet without getting into the gravity of another planet or being defeated by attacking enemies.

reception

The Anime Encyclopedia compares the series with Two Years of Vacation , whose modernized Sci-Fi implementation with a "crazy crew" is the story of Vifam . The length of the OVA episodes, which make exactly 8 television episodes and continue the storyline of the series, indicated that this was originally planned as the usual 52-part series, but the last episodes were not shown on television, but instead later marketed as video were.
