Gjest Baardsenstøtta (in German about Gjest Baardsen column) is a rocky island rising steeply out of the water immediately north of the western part of Cape Valdivia and thus north of Bouvet Island . The narrow strait that separates the rock from the island is called Djevleporten .
The island was named after Gjest Baardsen (1791–1849), a master thief from Sogndalsfjøra . The name was proposed by the Norwegian Polar Institute in 1980 .
