Gladstone Professor of Greek

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gladstone Professor of Greek is an academic chair in Greek studies that was originally appointed when the University of Liverpool was founded in 1881. The chair is named after the British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898) in recognition of his scientific merits and because of the close ties between the Gladstone family and Liverpool .

Due to the decline in the teaching of classical philology ( English classics ) in the UK, the chair has been vacant since 1983, its last owner to date, as Anthony Arthur Long , gave him the benefit of a job in the US.
