As smooth pressing two closely related to production processes referred to the group of pressing- count, which in turn to pressure forming counts. They are used to improve the surface of the work piece. The roughness can be reduced, the fatigue strength and wear resistance are increased by strengthening the surface and by introducing internal compressive stresses .

Both methods use tools with rounded heads, some of which are polished . These are pressed onto the surface and pulled over it. This leads to sliding, a relative movement between the surface and the tool. The pressure generated by the tools causes the material to flow near the surface. The shape of the surface produced depends largely on the movement of the tools and only slightly on their shape.

In DIN 8583-5, in which all indentation processes are described, a distinction is made between the following two processes:

  • Pressing flat with straight movement is a process in which the tool movement is straight (similar to planing ), i.e. not rotating or revolving.
  • Flattening with a rotating motion is a process with a rotating motion. Most of the time, the round workpieces rotate around their own axis, similar to turning .
