The Gleislose Bahn Budweis was a trolleybus company , still called Gleislose Bahn in the German-speaking world , in Bohemia . The 1.6-kilometer route in the city of Budweis , now known as České Budějovice , existed from 1909 to 1914 and connected the so-called Prager Vorstadt with the Ottilienfriedhof on the northern outskirts. It followed the entire length of the Pražská street .

history

The facility was opened on October 27, 1909 and complemented the local tram that was introduced on June 15 of the same year . Actually this should lead to the cemetery, but the authorities forbade a level crossing with the railway line České Budějovice – Plzeň , based on its old route until 1968. As a result, the tram ended at the level crossing - which was at the confluence of ulice Nádražní - where then Connection to the Gleislose Bahn existed. This was the second trolleybus operation in what is now the Czech Republic , after the Gmünd electric trolleybus line opened in 1907 .

The trackless railway Budweis was built and operated according to the Mercédès-Électrique-Stoll system . The vehicles used in Budweis thus had - as is generally the case with this system - a four-wheeled contact cart for power consumption and wheel hub motors . There were two motor vehicles , one was already available at the opening, the second was delivered in 1911. Followers did not exist. The vehicles were housed in the tram depot, where they had to be towed by a railcar.

On 1 August 1914 the Trackless had to train due to the war be reinstated. Between October 28, 1948 and September 24, 1971, the first modern trolleybus operation existed in České Budějovice, and the current network went into operation on May 1, 1991.
