In the case of railways, the central axis of the tracked and built track is referred to as the track center , or track axis . It is exactly on half the track width .

The center of the track is an important reference point for clearances when building from all other railway systems and when there are multiple tracks. All distance dimensions such as platform edges, side loading ramps , signals , masts for the overhead line , position of the contact wire for the electric train operation, position of the power rails for underground and S-Bahn (especially Berlin and Hamburg, since only here the S-Bahn with power rails driving) always refer to the center of the track.

Dangerous areas and safety rooms for the personnel working on the track are also often referred to the center of the track in the guidelines and regulations.
