The distance between the links is the free space between the links standing one behind the other. In the case of foot troops, it is usually so big that when the arm is outstretched, the man behind is touching the shoulder of the man in front with his fingertips (around 45 cm to 64 cm). During marches and movements without a step, the distance between the limbs increases to about 80 cm. For riders it is one step and can be between 80 cm and 240 cm.
