Slip

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A glitsche (regionally also Schlitterbahn , Schlinderbahn , Schleifbahn or ice rink ) is understood, especially in northern Germany, to be a sliding surface made of ice or smoothed and icy snow . It is laid out as winter fun by children on streets, sidewalks, squares, schoolyards, etc.

Word origin

The term is probably "slide" from the word or "Glide" in connection with the term "slip" emerged and Krünitz 1773 in Oeconomischen encyclopedia as Holzglitsche , a place where you, the precipitated wood from a mountain roll down or slide can described. In the Braunschweig dialect it is referred to with the related words "Glissecke" or "Glissepies".

Manufacturing and process

The prerequisite is always a flat surface without any major roughness , as is usually found on paved surfaces. A light snow cover is also required on this area. The snow is trodden by stamping with the shoes over a width of 50 to 60 cm and over a length of 5 to 7 m. Rubbing with the soles of the shoes quickly freezes the surface and turns it mirror-like.

The glitscher takes a short run-up in order to be able to slide on the icy surface with the momentum of the run-up - "glitschen" (or slither in High German). The smoother the soles of the shoes, the higher the speed. In order not to fall, a side posture or a crouching position is assumed. Slips cannot be used with ice skates , but you can also find slips on the ice cover of frozen water, where they are used by children who do not have ice skates.

hazards

Slipping is potentially dangerous: at the end of the slide, where the ground is dull again, the sudden braking can cause the slipper to fall and injure itself. This also applies to the blunt edge areas when you get off the track. Slipping on sidewalks and other areas used by pedestrians pose a particular risk, as the mirror-like surface is often not recognized in time and can cause serious falls. In winter, the creation of slips is often forbidden in schoolyards and caretakers are required to dull and sprinkle these areas in order to prevent accidents.
