A Global Depository Receipt ( GDR ), also International Depository Receipt ( IDR ), the global shape of the depository receipt (English depository receipt ) and thus a certificate , the ownership of a share securitized .

A GDR always refers to an underlying share and represents a fraction of this, exactly one share or a group of this share. While warrants usually certify the right to a share without the right to the dividend of the respective share, this right is included in the GDR. By mapping the base value (an underlying share) in a GDR, the otherwise “foreign” share becomes a domestic security. Since it is not allowed many investors due to legal or statutory provisions to invest in foreign securities, and these foreign securities often simultaneously have difficulty outside the home country list to let the detour via the GDR is an often selected option to the shares to market a company abroad.
The shares securitized by the GDR are then traded via this vehicle. Since GDR are very similar to stocks due to their structure, investments in them are often made in e.g. B. regards annual financial statements and fund prospectuses as a normal investment in conventional stocks.
