Global Gag Rule

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Mexico City Policy (also Mexico City Gag Rule ), a policy begun in the United States in 1984 under President Ronald Reagan , became the Global Gag Rule (after English Gag Rule , "one does not talk about it" , direct translation: Global Gag Rule ) , known.

The Global Gag Rule stated that all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that provide information and services related to abortion or even speak in favor of it, the US government's funds will be cut. The decree put a lot of pressure on NGOs as grants from the United States government constitute the bulk of the money allocated to family planning organizations in developing countries. The policy was initially in force from 1984 to 1993, then was overruled by Bill Clinton . In January 2001, the policy under George W. Bush came into force again and was terminated again in January 2009 shortly after Barack Obama took office . Donald Trump put the policy back into force shortly after taking office, albeit expanded from organizations specializing in family planning to all global organizations active in the health sector.

The Global Gag Rule has been heavily criticized for not preventing abortion. On the contrary, it is forcing the NGOs to provide less information about family planning and to distribute fewer contraceptives. More unwanted pregnancies , abortions, and deaths could result.
