Global Taxonomy Initiative

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI) is an international network that deals with strengthening taxonomic expertise and resources on a national and international level. National focal points act as local contact points by bundling taxonomically relevant information and resources and making them publicly accessible.

History and creation

The GTI was founded in 1998 by the member states of the Biodiversity Convention during the 6th Conference of the Parties (COP VI / 8) in order to counter an existing lack of taxonomic expertise in global biodiversity research. Although in-depth knowledge of species and expert knowledge are of central importance for correct and targeted protective measures, the number of professionally newly trained taxonomists continues to decline. The aim of the project is to strengthen the local research landscape by establishing national contact points (so-called national focal points ) in order to promote the international exchange of knowledge through their networking.

National contact points

The national contact points are nominated by the governments of the respective member states and voted in plenary. The function of the National Contact Point is to collect taxonomically relevant information (in the form of actor databases, education and funding opportunities, workshop and appointment announcements and other taxonomic resources) locally. At the international level, a global network should facilitate communication between taxonomists.

A total of 210 national contact points are currently registered with the CBD. Argentina, Belgium, Germany, Poland and Japan have their own website. A special feature of the GTI Contact Point Germany is a comprehensive acronym database with around 3500 entries, which is constantly being expanded.

The GTI is supported by various partner projects such as Diversitas , Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).
