Glossa (insect)
The glossa (Greek "tongue"; plural glossae ) is the inner of the two appendages on the prementum of the insect labium . It thus corresponds to the lacinia of the maxilla , while the external appendix is called the paraglossa and corresponds to the galea .
In some insects the mouthparts are transformed into piercing-sucking or sucking mouthparts. In the bees in particular, the glossae are greatly elongated.
