The paraglossa ( Greek glossa 'tongue'; plural paraglossae ) is the outer of the two appendages on the prementum of the labium of insects . It thus corresponds to the galea of the maxilla , while the inner appendix is called the glossa and corresponds to the lacinia .

In some insects the mouthparts are transformed into piercing-sucking or sucking mouthparts, whereby the paraglossae can also be specialized or absent. In the bees in particular, the glossae are greatly elongated and lie in the basal area in a sheath that is formed by the paraglossae.
