Gnome Display Manager (GDM for short) is a display manager from the Gnome project. The stated goal of the developers is the ease of use ". The goal is did users shoulderstand never, ever have to use the command line to customize or troubleshoot ET" ( "The goal is that the user never the command line needs to use to configure the GDM or fix errors. " ). Another feature compared to the Display Manager Xdm is the simple management of skins . Since the GDM is part of Gnome, it is used by default on many Linux distributions . However, there is now a trend towards simpler and faster display managers. Ubuntu uses LightDM as of 11.10 which has only 5000 lines of code compared to GDM's 50,000 lines of code.
