The KDM (acronym for KDE Display Manager ) is a graphical display manager for Unix-like operating systems . It is one of the central components of the KDE Plasma Workspaces graphical user interface , but can also be used for other X-based user interfaces. From KDE Plasma 5, the newly developed Simple Desktop Display Manager is preferred.

KDM enables users to log in with their username and password and starts the desired session with the help of this data . This can be a KDE plasma session, but also, for example, a Gnome or command line session.

KDM is based on the X Window System and replaces its standard login manager XDM . Like XDM, KDM also offers an XDMCP chooser. Unlike XDM, however, KDM is based on the Qt library and, with its operating philosophy, fits seamlessly into the further developed KDE user interface.

KDM can be configured via the KDE control center and optically adapted via themes . Also user icons are possible.
