Vyond (until 2018: GoAnimate ) is a cloud- based platform for creating animation videos. With this page, registered users can create videos based on defined figures, objects and backgrounds; new figures in different styles can be created using an editor. It is also possible to create a video using a template. This page is intended to facilitate the creation of animation videos, as there is no need to draw, as is the case with other programs such as Adobe Flash .

background

GoAnimate worked on a Flash basis until January 2016, but switched to HTML5 due to technical problems , which meant that support for most of the motifs had to be discontinued on July 26, 2016 and only three remained. The status of the characters in a video can be changed. The selected figure can be set to music using speech synthesis, by inserting an audio file or using your own voice using a microphone. The site itself has TTS voices in 22 different languages, including German.

The size of a figure or an object can be changed, as can the color (s) for certain objects and backgrounds. GoAnimate's library has a variety of music tracks and sound effects; more can be added.

From 2008 to 2012 there was a motif about the musician Akon , who commented positively on GoAnimate. In 2012, however, this had to be deleted for legal reasons. Users who signed up before 2012 can still use the theme, provided they have at least one video with Akon on their channel.

In addition to the main page, there are also the slightly modified versions GoAnimate4Schools and GoAnimate Wix (currently under maintenance, the page has not been accessible since November 9, 2016, but a restore is still possible, as this was the case for several months in 2015/2016 ), some of which are used for other purposes.

In December 2019 the old Legacy Video Maker had to be switched off due to the discontinuation of Adobe Flash , since then it has only been possible to produce videos on Vyond Studio .

history

The company was founded in 2007 by Alvin Hung; The website finally went online in 2008.

In 2011, GoAnimate and YouTube began a partnership . Since then, GoAnimate videos can be exported directly to YouTube. It is now possible to convert the videos to MP4 files. However, these options are disabled for users of the free version. In the fall of the same year, motifs with candidates for the 2012 presidential election in the United States were added, which quickly became very popular.

As of July 2013, GoAnimate had created over ten million videos; it thus developed into the most widespread animation platform.

In May 2015, Alvin Hung announced that he would expand GoAnimate even further and aim for an IPO. It remains open at which stock exchange this should take place. At the end of 2015 the company had over 50 employees. At the beginning of 2016, GoAnimate switched from Adobe Flash to HTML5 after an announcement in October 2015.

In 2016 GoAnimate worked on its own app for smartphones .

distribution

More than 10,000 users have registered on GoAnimate since 2007. Most of it comes - at least that's what it gives the impression - from the USA . A few come from Germany , Austria or Switzerland , because enough videos have been published in German. In the Spanish area the site seems to be relatively widespread. However, the exact nationality of a user can only rarely be determined; this is because most users do not indicate their nationality.

criticism

Despite its great popularity, GoAnimate received some negative criticism, mainly because of the simple principle. In 2011, the American animator Harry Partridge published a parody created with Adobe Flash called Go! Animate - An Animation Revolution . This parody, which was not meant to be very serious, was received rather negatively by GoAnimate users, and many countered it with parodies with names like Flash - An Animation Revolution . However, it is forgotten that GoAnimate ran with Flash back then, so the site would not exist without it.

GoAnimate also lost some of its popularity among fans in early 2016 after the HTML5 update, which resulted in the discontinuation of all topics with the exception of business friendly , whiteboard animation and video infographics . At the same time, GoAnimate had to delete some votes because GoAnimate was unable to renew its licenses due to financial problems - which could also have been the reason for the discontinuation of the topics.
